On January 14th 2013, at the Public Hearing on the Proposed South Surrey Casino, the NoCasinoSurrey Association submitted a 42 page report to Surrey City Hall which reports on why the proposed South Surrey Casino Complex is bad for the community, bad for families, bad for our local economy, bad for business, and bad for Surrey.
Our submission to Surrey City Council was well researched from academic literature, including citations. One high light of the document was its report on the effects of Casinos on Crime. Casino owners will point our that reported crime often goes down when a Casino is built. While this is not true in all cases, it is true on average, but only for the first year after the casino is built. After that, crime goes up almost exponentially year after year. Check out this graph from a study on the effects of Casinos on crime. This study is by researchers from MIT and shows that crime rates go down in the first year, and then grows much higher in the 2 to 5 years after the casino is built.
